Brazil’s President Bolsonaro shares explicit video, sparking outrage
The President, known for his homophobia, asked his 3.4 million Twitter followers on Tuesday to draw their own conclusions about the video, which showed one man apparently urinating on another — an act known as a golden shower. But Bolsonaro’s tweet has sparked outrage and widespread ridicule in the countryThe hashtags #ImpeachmentBolsonaro and #goldenshowerpresident topped global search trends on Wednesday — alongside #BolsonaroTemRazão, meaning “Bolsonaro, you’re right,” which was being used by his supporters. On Wednesday, Bolsonaro tweeted: “What is a golden shower?” Carnival is a famously LGBT-friendly annual event that sees tens of thousands of revelers party into the early hours of the morning on streets across the country in the lead-up to Ash Wednesday. This year’s iteration has turned into an opportunity to criticize the President, with revelers mocking Bolsonaro with chants, costumes and masks. Partygoers have uploaded footage from across the country of huge crowds chanting obscenities against the President. This may have compelled the President to hit out at the event.”I don’t feel comfortable showing this, but I need to expose the truth to the population so they can have knowledge and keep their priorities in mind. This is what many ‘blocos’ (street carnivals) have become,” he wrote in the tweet accompanying the explicit video. The footage showed two men, apparently on top of a bus stop — one man, wearing a jockstrap, appeared to touch himself sexually before allowing another man to urinate on his head. It is unclear how Bolsonaro obtained the footage or when or where it was recorded. Bolsonaro, who has been compared to US President Donald Trump and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, has stirred controversy with his misogynistic, racist and homophobic remarks. He once told a congresswoman that she did not deserve to be raped, because she was “very ugly,” Brazil’s TV Globo reported. He also said publicly that he would prefer to see his son “die in an accident” than a member of his family be homosexual.Bolsonaro’s win in the 2018 presidential election horrified liberal Brazilians, and followed one of the most polarizing and violent political campaigns in Brazil’s history.
