Phase 1 of the lottery was held in June and included the seven teams not invited to the league’s return to play. In a shocking turn of events, “Team E” won the first draw, meaning the top pick would go to one of the eight teams that were eliminated in the NHL’s play-in stage.
Along with the other seven teams which lost NHL bubble, the Wild had a 12.5% chance to win the top pick. Although it won’t be selecting first, Minnesota owns its first top-10 pick in the draft since it selected defenseman Matt Dumba seventh overall in 2012.
The consensus top pick of the 2020 draft is Alexis Lafreniere, an 18-year-old winger from Canada. Lafreniere has spent the last three seasons in the QMJHL and tallied an astounding 112 points in 2019-20 (35 goals, 77 assists).
The NHL draft is currently scheduled for Oct. 9-10.
