Cardinals option Ponce de Leon among flurry of roster moves

Daniel Ponce de Leon has been sent to the St. Louis Cardinals’ alternate training site in Springfield following his rough start against the Cleveland Indians on Friday night.

Ponce de Leon gave up four runs on two hits and four walks in two-thirds of an inning in the Cardinals’ 14-2 loss. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 7.82 ERA in five games (four starts) in 2020.

The move was among many made by the club since the close of Friday’s game, mostly to address the need for more fresh arms.

Optioned to Springfield along with Ponce de Leon were pitcher Junior Fernandez and infielder Max Schrock. Pitcher Ricardo Sánchez was placed on the 10-day injured list (left elbow pain). Sánchez threw 53 pitches in two innings of relief Friday.

The Cardinals also recalled four players from Springfield: first baseman John Nogowski and pitchers Rob Kaminsky, Seth Elledge and Ryan Meisinger.
