Green Bay Packers predictions: Week 2 vs. Lions

When we last left you, the NFL prognosticators were nearly split on who they thought would win the Week 1 matchup between Green Bay and Minnesota.

The Packers’ Week 2 matchup vs. Detroit? There’s a wide consensus on which team will emerge with a victory.

Of course, it probably helped that the Packers ran (or should that be passed?) roughshod over the Vikings while the Lions blew a game to Chicago. And Mitch Trubisky.

Believe it or not, not everyone is picking Green Bay to win, though. Let that serve as at least one reason for you to scroll though this article.

Here’s this week’s Packers predictions from around the web:

Barry Wilner of the Associated Press: Packers 30, Lions 19.

Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com: Packers 34, Lions 23. “The Packers looked like Super Bowl contenders last week against the Vikings, and now come home to face a Lions team that lost a tough one to the Bears last week. The Lions made Mitch Trubisky look good. Watch what Aaron Rodgers does to them. Blowout.”

NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal: Packers 35, Lions 21. “Blowing a 17-point fourth-quarter lead to Mitchell Trubisky is a rather dark timeline to begin a make-or-break season for Lions coach Matt Patricia. Heading to Lambeau Field with a banged-up secondary to face Aaron Rodgers coming off one of his best games in years is even darker. Patricia doesn’t have the personnel to generate pressure consistently, so he usually tries to outsmart opposing quarterbacks with coverages, to limited effect. That strategy isn’t going to work with shaky backup cornerbacks, even with No. 3 overall pick Jeff Okudah likely to make his debut after missing Week 1 with a hamstring injury following a rocky training camp. To top it off, Detroit’s offense doesn’t look like it will be ready to hang in a shootout until Kenny Golladay, who is dealing with a hamstring injury of his own, is right. This is the darkest timeline.”

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times: Packers 30, Lions 24. “The Lions couldn’t stop the run or pass against the Bears. What’s Aaron Rodgers going to do to them? Then again, maybe Matthew Stafford and the ageless Adrian Peterson can keep the visitors in this.”

John Breech of CBSSports.com: Packers 30, Lions 23.

Will Brinson of CBSSports.com: Lions 35, Packers 28. “People are pumped about Aaron Rodgers being back and that’s swell, but let’s see what Green Bay does offensively in Week 2 before we crown him. Just kidding, he’ll have another big game this week, because the Lions defense is completely shredded. It’s very possible the Lions are going to shred the Packers back, though. If Kenny Golladay plays, I think the Lions win.”

Vinny Iyer of the Sporting News: Packers 31, Lions 24. “The Lions melted down in the fourth quarter against the Bears with more defensive issues under Matt Patricia, including hamstring injuries to cornerbacks Desmond Trufant and Justin Coleman. That’s bad timing for another division game against a Packers offense firing on all cylinders and then some with the Aarons, Rodgers and Jones. The Lions will hope to get Kenny Golladay back, but their top wide receiver also can be contained by Jaire Alexander. Lambeau Field won’t be the same without Cheeseheads filing the stands, but the Packers still will have good reason to leap.”

Tad Haslop of the Sporting News: Packers 26, Lions 23. “As tempting as it might be, and even though everybody else is doing it, the Packers can’t look at the Lions as the ‘same old Lions’ after Detroit gifted Chicago a win last week. This is still a tricky division game against a team that had reasonable expectations for 2020 but was embarrassed in Week 1. The better team should still win even if the game is closer than expected.”

The Miami Herald’s Greg Cote: Packers 27, Lions 20.

Jordan Dajani of CBSSports.com: Packers 38, Lions 20.

Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski: Packers.

Josh Schrock of NBC Sports Bay Area: Packers 34, Lions 20. “Aaron Rodgers looked like he was on a mission in Week 1, throwing for 364 yards and four touchdowns in a win over the Vikings. The Lions are about two losses away from quitting on Matt Patricia. Make it one after this week.”

Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith and Mike Florio: MDS – Packers 31, Lions 14. Florio – Packers 34, Colts 20.

Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman: Packers 35, Lions 20.

CollegeFootballNews.com’s Pete Fituak: Packers 31, Lions 23. “The Green Bay offense might have been unstoppable against the Vikings, but watch out for Detroit to do more than enough to keep up the pace with a balanced attack and enough of a rush to at least bother Rodgers. Stafford will get to 300 yards, but the Packers will come up with more than 400 yards of total offense again.”

Damond Talbot of Draft Diamonds: Packers.
