Wild give nod to North Stars with new ‘Reverse Retro’ jersey

The State of Hockey is going back to its roots in 2020-21.

The Minnesota Wild unveiled a new “Reverse Retro” jersey on Monday. The sweater features a combination of the 1978 Minnesota North Stars jersey with the current Wild logo sewn across the chest. It’s the first time the green and gold North Stars colors have been featured in Minnesota’s uniform since the Wild franchise began in 2000-01.

Minnesota will wear the jersey in multiple games during the 2020-21 season.

“We are thrilled that our Reverse Retro adidas jersey honors Minnesota’s first NHL team, the North Stars. While we’ve worked hard to build a distinct brand for the Wild, we have always looked for creative and appropriate ways to recognize the North Stars’ history in the State of Hockey,” Wild senior brand advisor John Maher said in a statement. “We understand that many of our fans’ first NHL experience was cheering on the green and gold. These ‘Reverse Retro’ games will be a fun accompaniment to the coming season.”

The North Stars were a mainstay in Minnesota from 1967-93 before moving south to become the Dallas Stars before the 1993-94 season. Minnesota reached the Stanley Cup Final twice as the North Stars but lost both times – in five games to the New York Islanders in 1980-81 and in six contests to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1990-91.

All 31 NHL teams unveiled a new ‘Reverse Retro’ look Monday, marking the first time in league history that all teams participated in a alternate jersey program.
