Gophers top Penn State 3-2, sweep Nittany Lions to open season

The Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions 3-2 on Friday at 3M Arena, securing a 2-0 start to the season and a sweep of the Nittany Lions.

Minnesota got off to a good start with a power-play goal from Scott Reedy with 15:25  left in the first period.

Penn State knotted it up later in the first but Sammy Walker put the Gophers back on top with an open goal. It came just 0.8 seconds before the first intermission.

Minnesota got went up 3-1 with an upper-deck strike from Brannon McManus on a power play with 6:32 left in the second period.

The Nittany Lions added another goal in the third period but it was not enough to change the outcome.

The Gophers will be back in action on Monday when they host the Ohio State Buckeyes for the first game of a two-game series.
