Albert Pujols to retire after 2021 season

Albert Pujols‘ 21st season in Major League Baseball will be his last.

The legendary slugger, who starred for the St. Louis Cardinals for 11 seasons before moving on to the Los Angeles Angels, will retire following the 2021 season, as his wife Deidre announced in an Instagram post on Monday evening.

Pujols, 41, played a major role in the Cardinals’ 2006 and 2011 World Series victories and won the 2001 NL Rookie of the Year Award and 2005, 2008 and 2009 NL MVP Awards in St. Louis. The 10-time All-Star ranks eighth in Cardinals history in games played (1,705), seventh in batting average (.328) and second in OPS (1.037), home runs (445) and RBIs (1,329).

Entering his final season, Pujols ranks 15th in major league history in hits (3,236), third in RBIs (2,100) and fifth in total bases (5,923), doubles (669) and home runs (662).
