Olivares delivers game-winner in Royals’ 6-5 win over White Sox

A pair of three-run innings propelled the Kansas City Royals to a 6-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox, the Royals’ third victory this spring.

The game ended in the middle of the sixth inning as both teams agreed to finish early at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Arizona.

Edward Olivares continued his strong start to spring with a go-ahead double in the fifth inning, one day after hitting a home run.

The Royals fell behind in the first inning as four of the first five White Sox hitters reached base, leading to three runs. Royals starting pitcher Carlos Hernández bounced back after some early-game struggles, ending his first inning of work with a double play and tossing a clean second frame.

Nicky Lopez and Michael A. Taylor drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the second inning for the first Royals runs of the day. A throwing error on a pickoff allowed the Royals to tie score at 3-3.

The White Sox were up 5-3 in the fifth when Kansas City answered with another three-run inning. Bobby Witt Jr. cut the deficit to one with a run-scoring single, his second hit of spring training, before Olivares doubled in two runs to make it 6-5.

With a 3-1 record, the Royals travel to Goodyear, Arizona, to take on the Cincinnati Reds in their next game Thursday.
