Brewers general manager David Stearns said the team is hopeful they can sign both players to minor-league deals and assign them to the alternate training site.
Boxberger, a nine-year veteran who has pitched for five teams, most recently Miami last season, allowed nine runs (eight earned) in eight innings this spring. He gave up 10 hits – three homers – but walked just one while striking out 11.
Zimmermann was looking to make a homecoming. The native of Auburndale, Wis., who went to UW-Stevens Point, allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings this spring, with one walk and three strikeouts. Injuries limited him to just 5 2/3 innings in 2020 with Detroit.
