Betis and Espanyol draw, stay far from Europa League spot

MADRID (AP) — Defender Zouhair Feddal scored four minutes into injury time as Real Betis salvaged a 1-1 home draw against Espanyol in the Spanish league on Monday, a result that left both teams practically out of contention for the Europa League next season.

The teams stayed in the middle of the 20-team standings, eight points from the final Europa League place with three matches remaining.

There were jeers from the Betis crowd at Benito Villamarin Stadium after the team’s seventh winless match in the last eight rounds, and fans called for the firing of coach Quique Setien.

The Seville club hasn’t won in its last four games.

Sergi Darder scored Espanyol’s opener after an embarrassing mistake by Betis midfielder Sergio Canales, who inadvertently crossed the ball to an opponent inside his own area.

It was the third draw in a row for Espanyol.
