Alex Iwobi thankful for the faith shown in him by Unai Emery
Arsenal and Nigeria international forward Alex Iwobi has heaped praises on Gunners’ manager Unai Emery for the faith shown by him in his abilities. The Spanish manager took over Arsenal responsibilities from Arsene Wenger, after the Frenchman’s departure post the 2017-18 season. Many football fans have lauded Alex Iwobi’s efforts in the recent Europa league final against Chelsea in which he scored a stunning goal. Although everyone had their money on Arsenal to win that match easily, Chelsea really put up a good performance and beat the Gunners 4-1.
A great multitude of football punters also lost money in the process as they couldn’t correctly predict such trashing at the hands of the Blues. Has Iwobi really flourished under Emery’s guidance?
Under the guidance of the 47-year-old coach, Iwobi has appeared 50 times for Arsenal in various competitions and has scored 4 goals so far. Talking to the press, the Nigeria international revealed that he initially had fears about Emery’s arrival at the club and was worried how it would impact him and the team.
He said, “I didn’t know what it was going to be like when he came. I can’t lie, it was a bit weird [at first] because I grew into the system
playing under Arsene Wenger and that is all I have known. But when he did come — I came late to pre-season as I was at the World Cup — he spoke to me and said what ideas he had for me. I have bought into them and I’ve played in a lot of matches and he has shown a lot of faith in me. I thank him for that.”
He further expressed that it’s a very proud feeling for him to be given a chance to play in as many games at such a young age. However, he understands that there is still a long way to go for him and he’s hoping to continue performing for the club, for many years to come.
Talking about Unai Emery’s chemistry with the rest of the club, Iwobi said that it’s well evident that everyone is fighting, not only for the club, but for him as well. He has very good chemistry with all the players and it can be clearly seen in the time he has been here so far.
Emery has made quite a few move, such as a surprise plot for transfer of Stanley N’soki from PSG to Arsenal. In Iwobi’s opinion, Emery had the perfect tactics to take Arsenal to the Europa League Final, and gave chance to the right players at the right time.
Although Iwobi had nursed dreams to win his first title for Arsenal at a young age, no one had an idea that the Gunners would lose despite a stunning effort by the Nigerian international.
However, Iwobi expressed his gratitude to have received the opportunity to play in such a big final. He believes his example is something that can be followed by the other youth, especially the aspiring young players in his home country.
