All new ‘Marlins Prospect Spotlight’ showcases trio of rising pitchers in Miami’s farm system
MIAMI (April 5, 2019) — FOX Sports Florida, the exclusive television home of the Miami Marlins, will premiere an all-new episode of “Marlins Prospect Spotlight” tonight upon conclusion of Miami’s game against the Atlanta Braves. Friday night’s premiere features host Kelly Saco highlighting a trio of pitchers in right-handed prospects Nick Neidert and Zac Gallen, as well as lefty Jarlin García, who is working to build upon his Major League experience.
The show begins during Spring Training in Jupiter, where Saco sat down with Neidert. In 2018, the 22-year-old was named the Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Year after his standout season with Double-A Jacksonville. Neidert shares his story of being a late bloomer in the baseball world as well as his offseason mission to Guatemela with his sister to help feed families in need. Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill, Vice President of Player Development and Scouting Gary Denbo, Director of Player Development Dick Scott and Manager Don Mattingly all share their thoughts on Neidert’s development and growth as a future Marlins starting pitcher.
The second player FOX Sports Florida gets to know is Gallen, a 23-year-old New Jersey native who had a strong Grapefruit League performance for the Marlins. After playing for the University of North Carolina, Gallen was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and later acquired by the Marlins in 2017 in the same deal that netted Sandy Alcantara and outfielder Magneuris Sierra. In 2018, Gallen pitched for Triple-A New Orleans. We hear from the Marlins front office about Gallen’s quick ascension through the Minor Leagues and what the future may hold for him as a Major Leaguer.
Rounding out the show is a trip to the Dominican Republic, where Saco caught up with García in his homeland. Garcia, who has been both a starter and reliever with the Marlins, shares his thoughts on his maturing as an athlete and also reflects on his first career start in 2018 in which he tossed six no-hit innings.
