Army hires Mike Buddie as athletic director from Furman

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Army has hired Mike Buddie as its athletic director.

The U.S. Military Academy announced Thursday that Buddie, who comes from Furman, will replace Boo Corrigan.

At Furman, Buddie negotiated a multiyear partnership with Nike, produced the athletic department’s first balanced budget and spearheaded an effort to bring the NCAA men’s basketball tournament to upstate South Carolina two years ago. It also landed two future tournament stops.

Buddie spent a decade at Wake Forest, his alma mater, serving as the sport administrator for baseball, women’s soccer, and men’s golf. He also worked with the football and men’s basketball programs.

A native of Berea, Ohio, Buddie was a pitcher for the Demon Deacons and drafted by the New York Yankees in the fourth round of the 1992 draft. He was a member of the Yankees’ 1998 World Series championship team and also pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers.
