Berrios makes final start of spring training, Twins lose 8-3 to Boston

Jose Berrios toed the rubber for the final time in spring training in the Minnesota Twins’ 8-3 loss to Boston.

Berrios allowed three runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched. He surrendered two solo homers by Kike Hernandez and Franchy Cordero in the first inning, but settled down and whiffed four batters before being pulled in the fifth.

The Twins got on the scoreboard on a fielder’s choice in the third inning when Willians Astudillo, batting ninth and playing first base, scored on a Josh Donaldson ground out. Minnesota added another on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Garlick in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2.

But the Red Sox notched another run in the fifth and scored three in the seventh inning off Minnesota left-hander Andrew Albers to take the lead for good.

Twins second baseman Spencer Steer, a 2019 third-round pick by Minnesota, homered in the ninth inning for his first in Grapefruit League play.

The Twins have two exhibition games remaining on their spring training schedule before they battle the Milwaukee Brewers on opening day Thursday.
