Brewers add infielder Travis Shaw to 40-man roster

It’s official: The “Mayor of Ding Dong City” is back in Milwaukee.

Travis Shaw, who signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers before spring training, was selected to the 40-man roster Tuesday.

Additionally, the Brewers placed Mark Mathias on the 60-day injured list with a torn labrum and optioned right-hander Phil Bickford to Triple-A Nashville.

Shaw could have opted out of his deal with Milwaukee on Monday if he wasn’t added to the team roster, but now it appears he’s the favorite to start at third base on opening day.

In 10 exhibition games with the Brewers this spring, Shaw is batting .150/.346/.350 with one double, one home run and six walks in 26 plate appearances.

Shaw played 382 games for Milwaukee from 2017-19, mashing 70 homers, 62 doubles and a .239/.335/.456 slash line. His best season came in 2017 when he logged 31 homers, 101 RBI and a career-best .273/.349/.513 slash line. Shaw hammered an additional 32 dingers in 2018.

However, he fell off the wagon in 2019. Shaw managed a .157 batting average in 86 games with Milwaukee and was non-tendered after the season. In 2020, Shaw appeared in 50 contests with Toronto and slashed .239/.306/.411 with six home runs.

Milwaukee also reassigned outfielder Dylan Cozens, infielder Zach Green, catcher Payton Henry, utility man Pablo Reyes and pitchers Aaron Ashby and Zack Brown to minor-league camp Tuesday.
