Brewers center fielder Lorenzo Cain opts out of 2020 season

The Milwaukee Brewers announced Saturday that center fielder Lorenzo Cain won’t play again in 2020.

In a brief statement released by the team, David Stearns is quoted as saying: “Lorenzo Cain has informed us that he will not participate for the remainder of the 2020 season. We fully support Lorenzo’s decision, and will miss his talents on the field and leadership in the clubhouse.”

More Brewers coverage

The Brewers’ games Friday and Saturday at Miller Park against St. Louis have already been postponed due to several Cardinals players and staffers testing positive for COVID-19.

Cain, who turned 34 in April, is married with three young sons.

Originally drafted by the Brewers in 2004, Cain was traded to Kansas City before the 2011 season, returning to Milwaukee as a free agent in 2018.

Cain was named an All-Star that season and finished the year with a slash line of .308/.395/.417. In 2019, he earned his first Gold Glove Award.

Cain was 6-for-18 in 2020 with a double, four runs and two RBI. He did not play in Milwaukee’s last game on July 29 in Pittsburgh, with Ben Gamel taking his place in center field.

There has been no official statement from Cain as of yet nor any corresponding roster move by the Brewers.
