Burnley pushes Cardiff closer to relegation from EPL
BURNLEY, England (AP) — Burnley pushed Cardiff closer to relegation from the Premier League with a 2-0 home win over the Welsh club on Saturday, a victory that all but ensures another season in the top flight for Sean Dyche’s side.
Chris Wood scored both goals for Burnley, which now looks safe on 39 points — 11 ahead of Cardiff, which remained five points from safety in 18th place.
Wood had already hit the woodwork when he put Burnley ahead on the half-hour mark, as he glanced home a corner by Dwight McNeil.
Cardiff thought it had been given a penalty shortly after the break as the assistant referee flagged for a handball against Ben Mee in the area. However, referee Mike Dean overturned the decision, to the dismay of Cardiff manager Neil Warnock.
Wood then doubled the lead in the 90th with a close-range header after Cardiff failed to clear another good delivery from McNeil.
