Cards’ McGee opts out of rest of 2020 season for health reasons
When the St. Louis Cardinals resume play Saturday, they will do so without assistant coach Willie McGee.
McGee, a Cardinals Hall of Famer and one of the most beloved players in franchise history, has opted out of the rest of the 2020 season.
McGee, 61, told Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he is doing so because of health concerns — his own and those of his family — amid a global pandemic that already has infected at least 18 members of the Cardinals family.
“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make in my career,” said McGee, who is in his third year on the club’s coaching staff.
The former NL MVP said he has high blood pressure and lives in a house with three older daughters and five grandchildren.
“I just don’t know how I would react if I were to get sick,” he said.
