Chelsea player Danny Drinkwater charged with drunk driving
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been charged with drunk driving after crashing his car into a wall after a night out.
Cheshire Police in northern England say Drinkwater was arrested early Monday and has been released on unconditional bail ahead of a court appearance on May 13.
The 29-year-old Drinkwater, who has played three times for England, and two women who were in his car were treated for minor injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
British newspaper The Sun reported Tuesday that Drinkwater had been at a charity party on Sunday night.
Drinkwater signed for Chelsea in 2017, a year after playing a key role for Leicester in its improbable Premier League title run. He has not played under Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri this season, and last played a competitive game 13 months ago.
