Collins, Pope lead Bethune-Cookman past South Carolina St
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Armani Collins sank a pair of free throws with one second left and Cletrell Pope made 1 of 2 shots from the line — also with a second on the clock — and Bethune-Cookman beat South Carolina State 98-95 in overtime on Saturday.
South Carolina State’s Ian Kinard buried a 3 with eight seconds remaining to knot it at 95-all. Dondre Duffus missed a jumper for the Wildcats, but the Bulldogs turned it over after the defensive rebound and the Wildcats called timeout with two seconds left. Out of the 30-second timeout, Kinard was called for a foul and the Bulldogs were whistled for a technical to set up the foul shots.
Wali Parks‘ layup with five seconds remaining in regulation tied it at 85-all for Bethune-Cookman (14-15, 9-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Parks missed the free throw for the chance to take the lead when he was fouled on the made basket.
Malik Maitland led the Wildcats with 26 points and Pope scored 20 with 10 rebounds. Duffus made all eight of his free throw attempts and scored 12, Parks had 11 points and Shawntrez Davis scored 10 with 13 rebounds.
Kinard led the Bulldogs (7-24, 5-10) with 22 points, Damani Applewhite added 20, Janai Raynor-Powell 17, Jahmari Etienne 16 and Rayshawn Neal 14.
