FCT Area Council Elections In Photos
Residents of Abuja on Saturday elected chairmen and councillors for the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted the exercise in Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
It is the only council poll conducted by the electoral umpire, and it takes place every three years. INEC also conducts bye-elections into vacant offices as the need arises.
INEC had published the final list of contenders in the polls, following the period for substitution and withdrawal of candidates as provided by law.

The names of 473 candidates sponsored by 14 political parties were approved. Of the figure, 110 candidates (chair and vice-chair) vied for the leadership of the six area councils while 363 candidates competed for 62 councillorship positions.
