Georgia Tech fires women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph
ATLANTA (AP) — MaChelle Joseph has been fired as the women’s basketball coach at Georgia Tech.
The school announced the move Tuesday, saying the decision followed an independent investigation into alleged mistreatment of players and staff. Joseph’s attorney says the coach is being punished for complaining about gender equity issues at the Atlantic Coast Conference school.
Joseph was placed on leave late in the season. Two of Georgia Tech’s top four scorers quit the team at the same time.
The Yellow Jackets closed the season on a four-game losing streak, three of those defeats coming after Joseph was suspended.
The 49-year-old Joseph posted a record of 311-198 during her nearly 16-year tenure as Georgia Tech’s coach. She guided her team to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, the last coming in 2014.
