Ifeanyi Chiejine, Ex Falcons Player Dies At 36 Years | NigerianMonitor

Confusion has trailed the demise of former Super Falcons forward, Ifeanyi Chiejine, who died on Thursday.

While some argued that she died of natural causes, sources close to the family said the football star died of a mysterious ailment.

According to one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Chiejine battled the mysterious ailment for several years.

Our correspondent gathered that the 36-year-old’s illness was kept from public knowledge because of its “uncommon nature.”

It was also learnt that efforts to revive her failed after she was taken to different churches in Lagos State.

“The belief is that she died of spiritual problems. She was taken to different places, part of which is Ikorodu and a very influential pastor in Lagos,” one of the sources added.

Reacting to her death, the Nigeria Football Federation said it was “terribly saddened.”

A statement from the NFF on Thursday said the deceased died after a “brief illness.”

The General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, said, “This is huge shock. We had no idea that she was sick. Ifeanyi was one of the most naturally gifted players to have featured for the Super Falcons. Her death at such a young age is a big blow.

“She gave one hundred percent of her ability and capacity each time she turned out for country. We will always remember her as a bundle of skill and energy, and as a patriotic individual who wore the green-white-green with a smile every time.”

Former teammates and fans also paid tributes to Chiejine with heartfelt messages across social media.

Former Super Falcons captain Evelyn Nwabuoku, who played alongside Chiejine at Bayelsa Queens, wrote, “So shocked hearing you are no more. You encouraged and influenced me positively. Rest in peace super talented legend, the most complete Nigerian player I was privileged to see and play with.”

Also, Falcons legend, Mercy Akide-Udoh, wrote on Facebook page, “Too soon to leave us, you are going to be missed.”

Meanwhile, there will be a minute silence for Chiejine at Saturday’s Nigerian Women Football League Champions Shield game between Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
