In his blood: Chiefs star Mahomes joins Royals ownership group
The local Super Bowl MVP now has an ownership stake in the Hometown Nine.
Patrick Mahomes, who led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl championship in 50 years and was named MVP of the title game, was announced Tuesday as the newest member of the Kansas City Royals‘ ownership group.
Mahomes isn’t exactly venturing into unknown territory, either. His father, Pat, pitched in the major leagues for 11 seasons. Had the younger Mahomes not chosen football, a baseball career was a real possibility.
“He has a deep commitment to Kansas City and a real passion for the game of baseball – dating back to his childhood,” said John Sherman, the chairman, CEO and principal owner of the Royals.
Mahomes has a few extra bucks in his pocket this season after signing a 10-year, half-a-billion-dollars deal with the Chiefs in early July.
“I’m honored to become a part owner of the Kansas City Royals,” the quarterback said. “I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”
Said Sherman: “He’s proven himself to be one of the top professional athletes and competitors anywhere, and he’s built a championship culture. He loves football, but he also grew up loving the game of baseball. We look forward to many years of a winning partnership.”
