Internal Security and Safety Officer at the Eye Foundation Hospital

The Eye Foundation Hospital was started in 1993 as a high tech specialist Eye hospital capable of providing services comparable to those obtainable abroad. It is the first and foremost indigenous eye practice in the country that runs a group practice with many sub specialized ophthalmologists.

Over the past 20 years, we have been helping with the fight against preventable blindness in Nigeria and West Africa, and have built partnerships with numerous organizations, various state governments and financial institutions. All of these with the aim of bringing better eye care to the poor, either through the Eye Foundation Hospital itself or it sister Charity hospitals- Deseret Community Vision Institute & Deseret Eye Center.

Reports To: Medical Director/Hospital Service Manager

Responsibilities
Your duties shall include, but not limited to the following:

  • Provide a professional, efficient, and approachable security service with associated switchboard and reception duties, maintaining a high level of customer service to staff and visitors at all times.
  • Carry out internal and external patrols, to ensure a safe and secure environment, recording maintenance issues, potential breaches of security or unusual occurrences in the ‘Daily occurrence book’.
  • To provide visitors to the Hospital with helpful advice, guidance and information and if not able to do so, direct to other members of staff who can assist.
  • Ensure that those who should not be granted access to the Hospital are professionally and politely prevented from gaining access or escorted from the building.
  • Provide support in an emergency or evacuation situation, in a calm and professional manner. Actively provide information to any emergency services when requested to do so.
  • As a safety officer undertake regular testing of fire alarms and other security equipment, completing the appropriate logs, and notifying the Security Supervisor or Head of Operations of any issues of malfunctioning equipment.
  • Ensure and regularly check that the Hospital fire exit doors are maintained free of obstructions when the Hospital is occupied, reporting any defects or maintenance issues as appropriate.
  • Monitor and respond immediately to alarm system activations to check designated areas of concern. Effectively use the Hospital PA system to notify Hospital staff and patrons of situations or actions required of them.
  • Ensure that the Hospital’s CCTV system is professionally, effectively and sensitively monitored in compliance with the Hospital’s agreed standards.
  • Conduct individual bag or property searches, if directed to do so by the Management.
  • Ensure the effective control and maintenance of keys and security equipment including any equipment.
  • Conduct routine security administration including the issue of visitor passes and, permits. Ensure that any lost property left at the Hospital is securely stored, recorded and retrieved for the owner where appropriate.
  • Maintain all security related equipment and working areas to a high standard of cleanliness and safety and ensure all defects are reported.
  • Complete relevant records and log books, in a professional manner providing sufficient detail.
  • Where necessary assist in the removal or escort of members of the public from the building where their behavior is disruptive or presents a risk to others.
  • Respond to requests to move on touts and vagrants from the Hospital’s property and ensure that staff and visitors are not harassed by providing a visible security presence.
  • Support and comply with the Hospital’s Fire, Health and Safety, and Security policies and procedures.
  • Undertake first aid training and provide first aid services to staff, visitors or patrons as requested.
  • Working with a Building Service Technician or Fire Officer, carry out the evacuation of people from lifts, to minimize panic and ensure the safety of all concerned.
  • Assist in the induction and training of new members of staff.
  • Where required work as a Duty Fire Officer (training will be provided) during events to patrol the building and report potential risks to the Management.
  • Deal with any suspicious packages, maintaining own and others safety and dealing with these in accordance with Hospital’s procedures.
  • Actively maintain the confidentiality of information to which Officers will be privy, be this around individuals or security sensitive information in relation to the Building, and using appropriate language, particularly within the public stage door working environment.
  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required by the Security Supervisor, Head of Operations, the Medical Director and the Management.

Logistics Management:

  • Responsible for airport pick up both for management staff and international guests.
  • Drop Off and escort of hospital guest {locally and internationally}.
  • Logistics coordination of hospital guest for internal movement from one location to another.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Criminology or a strong background in the military
  • Certification in HSE 1, 2, 3.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the same role in a corporate setting.

  • Good Knowledge of CCTVs
  • Attention to details.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be an active Listener.
  • Quality phone etiquette.

  • Ability to Multitask is key.
  • Proficient use of MS office suite {Word, Excel and PowerPoint}.
