Jeffers gets called up as Twins place Buxton, Garver on 10-day injured list

The Minnesota Twins made a few significant roster moves Thursday, most notably placing outfielder Byron Buxton and catcher Mitch Garver on the 10-day injured list. Buxton suffered left shoulder inflammation and Garver is dealing with a low-grade right intercostal strain.

To take their spots on the roster, the Twins selected the contract of catcher Ryan Jeffers and recalled outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. and right-hander Zack Littell from the alternate training site. The Twins also optioned left-hander Lewis Thorpe there.

Jeffers, who is ranked as the Twins’ No. 6 prospect by MLB.com, was selected by Minnesota in the second round of the 2018 draft. The 23-year-old batted .264/.341/.421 over 103 games last season with High-A Fort Myers and Double-A Pensacola. Jeffers will look to make his MLB debut with the Twins.

In 21 games with the Twins this season, Buxton is batting .221 with one double, five homers and 12 RBI. Garver, who exited Wednesday night’s game against Milwaukee after the sixth inning, is hitting .154 with one homer and two RBI.

Littell has allowed five runs in five innings (four appearances) this season with three strikeouts and three walks. Wade Jr. has appeared in one game but didn’t record an at-bat, as he was used as a defensive replacement late in Minnesota’s 14-2 win over Chicago on July 26.

The Twins wrap up a three-game series with Milwaukee on Thursday night. Tune in to FOX Sports North at 5:30 p.m. for Twins Live.
