LaFontaine gets fourth shutout in Gophers’ 3-0 win over Notre Dame

Jack LaFontaine earned his fourth shutout of the season and the No. 5 Minnesota Gophers beat Notre Dame 3-0 on Friday at Compton Family Ice Arena.

LaFontaine made 24 saves on 24 shots while also adding an assist on the eventual game-winner.

Minnesota opened the scoring with a power play goal from junior captain Sammy Walker at 11:10 of the opening period.

After a scoreless second, Sampo Ranta tallied his 13th goal of the season at 15:35 of the third, tipping in a shot from Brannon McManus to extend the lead.

The Gophers made it a three-goal lead when Walker fed Blake McLaughlin for an empty-net goal in the final second of regulation.

Minnesota reclaims first place in the Big Ten standings for at least one night as Wisconsin and Michigan play a Saturday-Sunday series this weekend.
