Late free throws sink Marquette in 69-68 loss to DePaul
CHICAGO — Charlie Moore scored DePaul’s final four points at the free-throw line to lift the Blue Demons to a 69-68 win over Marquette on Tuesday night.
Moore made two at line with 21 seconds left to snap a tie and added two more with 6 seconds remaining for a four-point cushion. Marquette’s Markus Howard made a 3-pointer as time ran out.
Moore finished with 15 points, one of five Blue Demons players in double figures. Romeo Weems added 13 points. Jaylen Butz chipped in 12, Jalen Coleman-Lands also scored 12 and Darious Hall had 11. Weems also had 11 rebounds.
Howard, coming in as the nation’s leading scorer at 27.6 points per game, had 31 points but shot only 7 of 20. He missed five straight shots in the final 4:32 before his game-ending 3-pointer. No other player scored in double figures for the Golden Eagles (18-11, 8-9 Big East Conference). Jayce Johnson had 10 rebounds.
The Blue Demons evened the season series against the Golden Eagles with the win. Marquette defeated DePaul 76-72 on Feb. 1.
DePaul (15-15, 3-14) finishes the regular season against Providence on the road on Saturday. Marquette finishes the regular season against St. John’s on the road on Saturday.
