Marquette fires head coach Steve Wojciechowski after seven seasons

The Marquette Golden Eagles are relieving Steve Wojciechowski of his duties as head coach of the men’s basketball team, the university announced Friday.

Wojciechowski, who was hired by Marquette before the 2014-15 campaign, spent the last seven seasons with the Golden Eagles. He compiled a 128-95 overall record and a 59-68 record in the Big East.

“After a thorough evaluation of our program over the last week, which included multiple conversations with Steve, I concluded that now is the right time for a new leader of our storied program,” athletic director Bill Scholl said in a statement.

Marquette made two NCAA tournament appearances under Wojciechowski in 2017 and ’19 but lost in the first round both times. The Golden Eagles went 13-14 overall in 2020-21, finishing ninth in the Big East.

“I’m confident that our history of success and our commitment to developing young men who are leaders on and off the court will attract the highest caliber of coaching talent,” Scholl said.

The Golden Eagles have had just three coaches over the last 22 years — Tom Crean (1999-2008), Buzz Williams (2008-14) and Wojciechowski.
