MLB Wild Card top plays: Padres shutting out Mets in Game 3

The San Diego Padres and the New York Mets meet Sunday in a win-or-go-home Game 3 on the final day of MLB wild-card action.

Both San Diego (89-73) and N.Y. (101-61) finished the regular season second in their respective NL divisions.

The winner will advance to face the Los Angeles Dodges in the next round, while the other National League matchup is set: Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies. The American League matchups — New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians and Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners — are also set.

The loser from Sunday’s tilt will join the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals, all of which were eliminated Saturday in two-game sweeps.

Padres catcher Austin Nola got his team on the board with a two-run single to left field in the second inning.

Finding a rhythm

Padres outfielder Trent Grisham singled to center, bringing in Ha-Seong Kim to extend San Diego’s lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning.

When it rains, it pours

Manny Machado‘s single in the top of the fifth inning allowed Jurickson Profar to score.

Just like that, the Padres took a 4-0 lead.

Closing time

The Padres added two more runs in the eighth inning, courtesy of a big hit from Juan Soto.
