MLS’ Los Angeles FC signs Dutch goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dutch goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer has agreed to join Los Angeles FC.

The MLS club announced the deal Wednesday to acquire the 34-year-old Vermeer, who has spent nearly all of his professional career in the domestic Eredivisie.

LAFC used targeted allocation money to sign Vermeer, who spent the past six seasons with Feyenoord.

He spent the previous decade with Ajax, winning four consecutive league titles and appearing in 13 Champions League matches. Vermeer also made five international appearances for the Netherlands from 2012-15.

LAFC reported to training camp for the third season in franchise history Monday without a clear starting goalkeeper after Tyler Miller’s contract ran out late last year. Miller won 34 games with 19 shutouts in LAFC’s first two seasons, but he apparently hasn’t been invited back.

LAFC won the Supporters’ Shield last season with MLS’ top regular season record before losing to eventual champion Seattle in the Western Conference final.
