Mondesi, O’Hearn go deep as Royals beat Rockies 6-3
Adalberto Mondesi and Ryan O’Hearn homered as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Colorado Rockies 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.
With Colorado up 2-1 in the top of the sixth, Mondesi hit a two-run blast to give Kansas City the lead. It was the 25-year-old shortstop’s second home run of the Cactus League slate.
O’Hearn followed with a two-run shot of his own in the seventh, going deep for the fourth time this spring.
Jorge Soler went 2 for 3 with an RBI double for Kansas City, which leads all major league teams with a .652 winning percentage (15-8) this spring. Bubba Starling drove in Emmanuel Rivera with an eighth-inning double to add to the Royals’ lead.
Veteran lefty Mike Minor had his best start of the spring for the Royals, striking out six while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks over five innings. Left-handers Jake Brentz and Richard Lovelady had identical lines over one inning each, allowing two hits and striking out one over a scoreless frame. Jake Newberry gave up a solo homer to Colorado’s Colton Welker in the ninth.
The Royals wrap up their Cactus League schedule on Monday afternoon, hosting the Indians at Surprise Stadium.
