Mondesi’s hot finish nets AL Player of the Week honors

After a miserable start to the abbreviated season, Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi finished it ridiculously strong. And got some notice for it upon its conclusion.

Mondesi was name the American League Player of the Week for the campaign’s final seven-day stretch.

Mondesi went 16 for 26 in that period, a .615 batting average that led the major leagues. He also led MLB in runs (10), hits (16), stolen bases (five), on-base percentage (.655), slugging percentage (1.154) and OPS (1.809) during that final week, when the Royals went 5-2. His eight extra-base hits tied for the AL lead.

Other notable feats from his final week:

• Recorded a hit in nine consecutive at-bats, one hit shy of the club record of 10 straight hits (Joe Randa, 1999).

• Walked twice during that stretch to reach safely in 11 consecutive plate appearances, tying the club record (Randa, 1999; Steve Braun, 1978; Amos Otis, 1970).

• Multiple hits and at least one RBI in each of his last five games, matching the club record (seven times, last by Eric Hosmer, 2016).

• Multiple extra-base hits in each of his last three games, tying the club record (eight times, last by Mike Sweeney, 2005).

• Third career game with four hits and two steals, the second most such games in the majors since 2010, one behind Ichiro Suzuki.

• First Royals player with three hits and multiple steals in consecutive games.

• Finished the season-ending series against Detroit with 12 hits in 14 at-bats, matching George Brett (1975 vs. California) for the club record for most hits in a four-game series and becoming the first AL player to record 12 hits in a four-game series since Joe Mauer in 2016.

• Perfect in 30 total chances and five double plays, third most among AL shortstops.
