No. 4 Gophers score six times in third period, wallop ASU 10-2

The No. 4 Minnesota Golden Gophers improved to 13-3 with a 10-2 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday.

Minnesota beat Arizona State 10-0 on Thursday, which means it outscored the Sun Devils 20-2 in the series. It is the Gophers’ second series sweep of Arizona State this season.

Minnesota got on the board 56 seconds into the game with a goal from Brannon McManus. The Sun Devils scored later in the period to draw even entering the second period.

Blake McLaughlin cut through the defense to score with 15:48 left in the second, followed by Sampo Ranta with his Big Ten-leading 10th goal of the season at the 6:10 mark. Freshman Carl Fish capped off the period with his first goal of the season, a long-range snipe with 5:43 left until the second intermission.

The Gophers led 4-2 after 40 minutes because ASU got one more goal in the second period.

Minnesota turned up the heat in the third period. The Gophers scored got to 10 goals for the second straight game, thanks to third-period scores from McLaughlin, Jack Perbix twice, Ben Meyers, Scott Reedy and Bryce Brodzinski.

Minnesota will be back in action on Friday at 5 p.m. for the first game of a two-game road series against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
