The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) is an independent humanitarian medical NGO that was created in 2009 by professionals of humanitarian medicine. ALIMA’s mission is to provide medical care in emergency situations or medical catastrophes.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Nurse Data Collector
Location: University of Maiduguri Hospital, Borno
Job Type: Temporary Contract, Full time 4 months
Report to: Nurse Data Collector Supervisor
Research Study
- We are collecting a set of standard health information (heart rate, breathing rate, level of anemia) from children ill with acute malnutrition to see if we can use them all together to determine which children are at highest risk of getting sicker and would need to be more closely monitored to better care for them
- This study is being conducted collaboratively by Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA), The Hospital for Sick Children, and The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).
General Job Description
- To collect data for a research study on acute malnutrition within an impatient therapeutic feeding centre run by ALIMA in The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).
Duties and Responsibilities
Enroll children into the study, follow children throughout enrollment in the study, discharge children from study (detailed task of each below):
Admission into Study:
- Enroll children into the study who fit the criteria for admission who have been indicated by the health care team
- Complete admission/discharge form including patient medical history, anthropometric measurements, and physical assessment
- Perform admission bloodwork for rapid test for malaria and hemoglobin via finger-prick, if not already done by health care team (record results if already done)
Children Currently in Study:
- Once per shift: perform vital signs on child (heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure), and assessment (capillary refill, respiratory assessment, oxygen saturation, oxygen use) and record on data collection form.
- Once per shift: record required medical data taken from child’s medical record AND location of child within the inpatient therapeutic feeding centre on the data collection form (ICU, Phase 1, Phase 2)
- Children discharged from study
- Record required information pertaining to child’s discharge on admission/discharge form
Education and Training
- Registered Nurse (RN)
Knowledge and Experience:
- Fluent in Hausa and English
- Experience in pediatric nursing care essential
- Experience with acute malnutrition an asset
- Experience in critical care nursing an asset
- Experience in previous research studies an asset
Skills and Competencies
Nursing Tasks:
- Proficient in taking vital signs of pediatric patients
- Able to perform blood pressure using non-invasive blood pressure machines
- Able to take measurement of oxygen saturation using oxygen saturation monitor
Other Qualities:
- Able to maintain utmost patient confidentiality
- Good planning and organization skills
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work as a team member
- Calm, patient and able to work in busy stressful environment
General:
- The responsibilities mentioned above are not exhaustive and other work can be required according to the needs of the mission.
- Mobility is requested from ALIMA staff, including short term assignments from their usual place of work.
- Part of any ALIMA-employee responsibilities is the attendance of trainings as per the requirements of the organisation.
