Packers receiver Devin Funchess opts out of 2020 season

The one wide receiver the Green Bay Packers did acquire this offseason won’t be playing in 2020

Devin Funchess announced Tuesday that he is opting out of the upcoming season due to concerns over COVID-19.

In an Instagram post, Funchess wrote “My closest family members have experienced the life-threatening impact of COVID-19 first hand and for their and my own safety, I’ve decided to opt out of the upcoming NFL season.”

A second-round pick of Carolina in 2015, Funchess recorded 311 catches for 2,265 with 21 touchdowns for the Panthers from 2015-18. Funchess played in just one game for Indianapolis in 2019 after being placed on injured reserve Sept. 10 due to a broken clavicle. Had had five receptions for 32 yards in his lone appearance.

Funchess signed with the Packers on Feb. 2, ostensibly to be the team’s No. 2 or 3 receiver, especially after Green Bay did not select any wideouts in the 2020 draft.

Because he is opting out, Funchess will be under contract with Green Bay for the 2021 season and he won’t count against the team’s salary cap in 2020.

Green Bay also put linebacker Greg Roberts on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.
