Packers Snap Counts: Dillon gets opportunity and runs with it

Oh, so that’s why the Green Bay Packers used a second-round pick on running back AJ Dillon.

With Jamaal Williams out with injury, Dillon, the 62nd overall pick of the 2020 draft, finally had an opportunity to shine Sunday night against Tennessee. He took it and ran. Literally.

More Packers coverage

Playing in a career-high 38 of the Packers’ 66 offensive snaps (58%), Dillon rushed 24 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns in Green Bay’s 40-14 victory over the Titans.

His punishing running style was put on display, as he logged six carries of 8+ yards, moved the chains five times and found the end zone twice. His biggest play, however, was a carry late in the third quarter on fourth-and-1 from the Titans’ 30-yard line. It was a draw play to Dillon, who burst through a hole on the right side of the line and outran the Tennessee secondary into the end zone for a score. His first career touchdown boosted the Packers’ lead to 33-14 and all but locked up a win.

Dillon surprisingly played more snaps than starting running back Aaron Jones (38%).

Entering Week 16, Dillon’s highest clip of offensive snaps was 23% — back in Week 7 against Houston when he was on the field for 14 of 62 plays. He had logged a total of 24 carries for 115 yards (4.8 average) with no touchdowns leading up to the clash against Tennessee.

The contracts of Williams and Jones expire after this season. If Green Bay decides to move on from both running backs, the ground attack would be in good hands with Dillon.

Now, all he needs to do is learn how to complete a proper Lambeau Leap.

Other notes from Sunday’s snap counts:

— Rookie linebacker Krys Barnes played a career-high 95% of the snaps and led Green Bay with seven tackles.

— Rookie tight end Dominique Dafney was on the field for a career-high 26 plays (39%). He saw more action than Jones (38%) and wide receiver Equanimous St. Brown (27%).

— Tavon Austin’s role in the offense continues to grow. After playing exactly four offensive snaps in his first two games with Green Bay, Austin was on the field for 17 (26%) against the Titans. He caught two passes for five yards, both receptions coming in the first half.

— Signed to the practice squad Dec. 15, defensive lineman Brian Price made his season debut by playing nine snaps (16%).
