Panthers re-sign defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to 3-year contract
SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that the club has re-signed defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to a three-year contract.
“MacKenzie is a solid two-way competitor who brings tenacity and skill to our lineup,” said Zito. “He has developed into a key member of the Panthers both on and off the ice and we look forward to him taking the next step in his career.”
Weegar, 26, appeared in 45 regular season games with Florida in 2019-20, producing a career-best 18 points and seven goals. In his National Hockey League postseason debut, he posted one assist over four Stanley Cup Qualifier games.
The 6-foot, 200-pound native of Ottawa, Ontario, ranked third on Florida in average time on ice (20:07), while ranking second among Panthers defensemen in hits (76) and third in blocked shots (71).
Weegar has played in 172 career regular season NHL games, all with Florida, amassing 41 points (13-28-41).
Originally selected by Florida in the seventh round (206th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft, Weegar played in 153 career American Hockey League (AHL) games (2014-15 to 2016-17), posting 70 points (23-47-70) and was named a 2017 AHL All-Star.
