Royals recall Junis, reinstate Montgomery, Cordero among six roster moves
The Kansas City Royals shuffled six players as they adjusted their roster heading into the I-70 Series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
Two players — pitcher Kyle Zimmer and outfielder Bubba Starling — were placed on the injured list.
Two players — pitcher Mike Montgomery and outfielder Franchy Cordero — were reinstated from the IL.
One player, pitcher Jakob Junis, was recalled from the team’s alternate training site. And one player, infielder/outfielder Erick Mejia, was optioned to that site.
Zimmer, who was removed from Tuesday night’s loss to St. Louis, was placed on the 60-day IL with a right elbow injury. Starling was placed on the 10-day IL with right lower back spasms.
Junis has spent the last week at the alternate training site. The right-hander returns to the Royals with a 0-2 record and 6.94 ERA in six games, all starts.
Montgomery has been on the IL since late July with a lat strain. The left-hander went two innings in his lone appearance, allowing five hits and three runs.
Cordero has been out with a broken right wrist since Aug. 9. He is slated to start in center field Wednesday night, replacing Starling from Tuesday’s lineup.
