Royals waste superb Duffy start, fall 1-0 to A’s in 11th inning
Mark Canha doubled in the only run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Oakland Athletics a 1-0 win and a series victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon.
Oakland rallied in the 11th against Jesse Hahn, the sixth Royals pitcher of the day. He allowed a walk, got two strikeouts and gave an intentional walk before Canha doubled down the right-field line.
Both of the game’s starters, Kansas City’s Danny Duffy and Oakland’s Homer Bailey, were superb in going seven innings each. Duffy allowed only two runs and a walk while Bailey, who was obtained from Kansas City in mid-July, gave up only three hits and a walk. Duffy had six strikeouts, Bailey 11.
The Royals had scoring opportunities in the seventh and 11th innings. A Jorge Soler double and intentional walk to Alex Gordon put runners on first and second with two outs, but A’s left fielder Chad Pinder dived to snag Ryan O’Hearn’s sinking liner for the final out.
The Royals loaded the bases in the 11th on as Bubba Starling leadoff single and two walks, but Soler struck out to end the threat.
Yost was impressed with both starters, Danny Duffy and ex-Royal Homer Bailey: “I didn’t see (Bailey) miss a location all day long, and the same, for me, with Danny.” #Royals pic.twitter.com/58CBCU4IqL
