SLU’s Perkins announces he’ll use extra year of eligibility, return for 2021-22 season

Saint Louis Billikens swingman Javonte Perkins is technically a senior, but Monday night’s matchup with UMass won’t be his final game at Chaifetz Arena.

Perkins announced Sunday that he’ll take advantage of the extra year of eligibility provided to all basketball players as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and return for the 2021-22 season. That’s major news for the Billikens, as the St. Louis native has arguably been their best offensive player for the last two seasons. The 6-foot-6, 210-pound guard/forward leads the team with 16.9 points this season and is also averaging 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

Perkins, who arrived at SLU in the fall of 2019 after two years at Southwestern Illinois College, finished second behind Jordan Goodwin in scoring last season with 15 points per game but averaged 18.2 points to lead the team during conference play.

Seniors Hasahn French and Jordan Goodwin, both of whom declared for the NBA Draft last summer before withdrawing and returning to SLU, will be honored during the Billikens’ Senior Night ceremonies on Monday.
