The deal keeps Dobnak in Minnesota through 2025 and includes team options for 2026, ’27 and ’28.

Needing depth at the lower minor-league levels, Minnesota signed Dobnak as an undrafted free agent in 2017. After a full season at Low-A Cedar Rapids in 2018, Dobnak began the 2019 campaign with High-A Fort Myers and quickly rose through the ranks. He made his MLB debut Aug. 9, 2019, and started a playoff game that year at Yankee Stadium, becoming just the fourth rookie in club history to start in the postseason.

In 2020, Dobnak registered a 6-4 record, 4.05 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 10 starts (46 2/3 IP) and led all major-league pitchers with a 62.1% ground ball percentage.

For now, Minnesota’s 2021 rotation looks set with Kenta Maeda, Jose Berrios, Michael Pineda, J.A. Happ and Matt Shoemaker, but Dobnak will undoubtedly fill in as a starter and appear in relief this summer.
