Twins reinstate slugger Josh Donaldson from injured list

Little by little, the ailing Minnesota Twins are getting healthier.

Minnesota reinstated third baseman Josh Donaldson from the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. Donaldson will bat second and play third base in the series finale  against Chicago on Wednesday night. To make room on the 28-man roster, the Twins designated infielder Ildemaro Vargas for release or assignment.

Donaldson, who signed a franchise-record four-year deal worth $92 million in the offseason, was placed on the 10-day injured list Aug. 7. He last appeared in a game July 31 before leaving that contest early with right calf tightness.

In seven games with the Twins, Donaldson is batting .182 (4-for-27) with one home run, four walks and seven strikeouts.

On Tuesday, the Twins reactivated outfielder Byron Buxton from the 10-day IL and right-hander Michael Pineda from the restricted list. Both players had a key role in Minnesota’s 3-2 win over the White Sox, a victory that snapped Minnesota’s six-game losing skid.
